Foreign Secretary William Hague provided an update on the progress of the inquiry into possible British involvement in the 1984 Golden Temple attack, following a question by Paul Uppal MP.
Calls from Sikh groups for an inquiry into the alleged British involvement in planning the operation intensified following the release of Secret and Top Secret documents last week. In response, David Cameron asked his Cabinet Secretary, Jeremy Heywood, to conduct an urgent investigation on the matter, recognising that "the incident remains a source of deep pain to Sikhs everywhere".
Repeating the Prime Minister's concern, Hague said, "these events led to a tragic loss of life and we understand the very legitimate concerns these papers will raise." He added, "The Prime Minister has asked the Cabinet Secretary to look into the case urgently and to establish the facts. That review by the Cabinet Secretary will soon be reaching its conclusion and those conclusions and findings will be published in the near future."
